(30-09-23) DOLOW — Tensions between Colonel Barre Adan Shire Hiraale and the Ethiopian Army have de-escalated following a series of talks in the Dolow district of Gedo Region, officials announced on Saturday.

On Tuesday, forces under Hiraale exchanged fire with Ethiopian troops, exacerbating an already volatile situation in the area. The incident raised concerns among both residents and officials.

Colonel Hiraale and Ethiopian military representatives subsequently convened for crucial talks aimed at quelling the tensions. The negotiations resulted in an immediate withdrawal of troops from both sides in a bid to restore tranquillity and prevent further conflict, authorities confirmed.

Previously, Hiraale had been ordered by Ethiopian officials to vacate the district — an order that contributed to the initial unrest. As part of the new agreement, the colonel has been permitted to remain in Dolow, marking a substantial reversal and a step towards the normalisation of relations.

Local district authorities and intellectuals played a pivotal role in these negotiations, actively participating in the efforts to defuse the situation.

The resolution comes after Hiraale, a high-profile political figure in the Gedo Region, accused the Ethiopian army of causing turmoil in Dolow during a recent BBC interview. He had indicated his willingness to engage in armed conflict with Ethiopian forces.

The accord has been widely received as a welcome development in Dolow, where tensions had flared up in recent days. Residents are hopeful that this agreement marks an end to the strife and a new beginning for sustained peace in the district.
