(09-10-23) MOGADISHU— A mortar attack on Monday morning in the Dabakain neighbourhood of Mogadishu’s Dharkenley district has claimed the life of the son of a Somali Member of Parliament and left his nephew injured. The extremist group Al-Shabaab is believed to be behind the attack.
Mohamed Keerow Mohamed, a representative in the Somali People’s Assembly, was the apparent target of the attack. Sources close to the family confirmed the death of the MP’s son, Mohamud Mohamed Keerow, at the scene. A nephew, Mohamed Warsame, was also injured in the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment.
This attack comes amid escalating violence in the region, including a suicide bombing near the presidential palace just last week. The mortar severely damaged the MP’s residence and neighbouring houses.
Al-Shabaab has a history of targeting political figures and public spaces, including recent attacks in the Tarabuushka neighbourhood of Wadajir district, which resulted in civilian casualties. The extremist group a week ago targeted key locations like the presidential palace and military bases such as the Halane camp and TurkSom military academy
