(06-10-23) MOGADISHU — A devastating roadside blast on a road frequently used by both civilians and military personnel killed at least two civilians and left another critically injured on Friday morning, as they travelled between Buurane and Mahaday districts in the Middle Shabelle region.
Landmines and other explosive devices have become a security issue in Somalia, posing challenges to both the Somali National Army and civilian road users. This indiscriminate method of attack has led to multiple casualties in recent months and continues to destabilise the already fragile environment.
The Shabelle river bank around Mahaday, an important farming area, has seen intense fighting. The Somali military, supported by local forces and ATMIS personnel, are engaged in conflict in the Ciid-Ciidka. On Thursday, elite troops trained in Eritrea joined the battle. These forces, considered among the best trained in the Somali army, aim to clear the area of remaining Al-Shabaab militants.
