(05-10-23) MOGADISHU — Abdirahman Sheikh Yusuf Al-Adalah, Somalia’s Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, stated on Tuesday that the government has achieved a “great success” in its year-long war against the militant group Al-Shabaab. The Deputy Minister made these remarks during a programme aired by State media on Thursday.
Al-Adalah announced that the “established order” of the extremist group has experienced a “complete collapse.” This change comes primarily due to joint efforts between the government and the public. “The militant organisation’s administrative, economic, intelligence and military systems have been completely annihilated,” said the Deputy Minister.
The government official further highlighted the shift in public sentiment, contributing to the weakening of Al-Shabaab. “There’s been a clear shift in public perception against Al-Shabaab, which has translated into active resistance,” stated Al-Adalah. He credited this transformation in public opinion as significantly aiding government forces in combatting the terrorists.
Efforts to eradicate Al-Shabaab’s influence have been underway for a year, resulting in the liberation of multiple regions within Somalia, a campaign that has intensified since last year when President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared an ‘all-out war’ on the group; however, Al-Adalah acknowledged that the process of clearing some areas continues.
