(01-10-23) MOGADISHU — Security forces in Somalia’s Dolow district intercepted a vehicle carrying explosives and ammunition on Sunday, effectively averting a potential attack. The ammunition was identified as originating from Sellier and Bellot, one of the oldest companies in the shooting and defence industry based in the Czech Republic.
The vehicle was found to contain munitions suited for a PKM machine gun, as well as materials that could be utilised for manufacturing explosives. While the intended target of this load remains unidentified, security agencies have stated that the objective was likely to inflict harm upon the district’s populace.
Governor Mohamed Hussein Abdi commended the security forces for their quick action, calling on them to continue their efforts. “Our security personnel have once again proven their commitment to safeguarding our community,” said Abdi.
This interception comes as Al-Shabaab militants exert increasing pressure on the Gedo region, notably through the recent setup of a checkpoint on a road linking the Luuq and Dolow districts. Despite facing fierce resistance from both governmental and armed local forces, the group appears to be extending its reach into areas previously considered less susceptible to their activity.
Security experts suggest that Al-Shabaab’s recent movements may indicate a tactical change, especially as numerous regions have been recently liberated from their grasp.
