(04-10-23) GALKAYO — A joint operation by the Somali National Army and local forces of the southern Mudug clans is currently underway in the forested area of Shabellow village, military sources confirm. The aim is to eliminate Al-Shabaab militants believed to be hiding in the area.
“The operation is robust and well-coordinated, taking place from multiple directions to maximise effectiveness,” said Col. Abdullahi Ali, a member of the Somali National Army.
Preliminary reports suggest that Al-Shabaab has suffered substantial losses, although exact numbers have yet to be confirmed.
This latest offensive comes on the heels of significant territorial gains against the extremist group. In recent months, most of the Mudug region has reportedly been cleared of Al-Shabaab elements. The operation is part of a broader strategy to restore peace and stability in Galmudug and Hirshabelle, where areas previously under Al-Shabaab control are being rapidly reclaimed.
The ongoing operation is viewed as a critical step in weakening the militant group and is seen as reinforcing the Somali government’s commitment to restoring regional peace.
