26-10-23) MOGADISHU — Gen. Ibrahim Sheikh Muhuddin, commander of the Somali National Army (SNA) met with U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Shane Dixon on Thursday. The focus was on enhancing cooperation in the fight against the extremist group Al-Shabaab.
The meeting occurred at a significant time when the Somali government is intensifying its military operations to remove Al-Shabaab from its remaining strongholds.
The United States has been a key ally in Somalia’s efforts to counter Al-Shabaab. Along with providing aerial support, the U.S. has also been actively involved in training and equipping the Danab, another of Somalia’s elite commando forces. This meeting signifies the importance both nations attribute to a united front against extremism.
This follows a meeting on Monday when President Hassan Sheikh engaged with U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Shane Dixon and Colonel David J. Haskell, the Joint Special Operations-AFRICOM Commander. The agenda for that meeting also focussed on intensifying joint efforts against Al-Shabaab.
