(05-10-23) MOGADISHU — — Somalia’s Minister of Information, Daud Aweis, held a press conference on Thursday where he declared substantial progress by government forces against Al-Shabaab militants in the states of Galmudug and Hirshabelle.
Aweis detailed a critical operation that took place this past Wednesday in the Shabeelow village, situated in the southern part of the Mudug region. Government forces, in collaboration with local militias called Mawiisleyda, successfully targeted Al-Shabaab insurgents, resulting in over 100 confirmed deaths.
“Al-Shabaab forces evacuated more than 100 of their casualties from the battlefield in three vehicles,” Aweis said, adding that additional bodies were abandoned as militants retreated from the area.
The minister also stated that government and allied forces have made significant inroads into Al-Shabaab-controlled territories, capturing and holding key positions. “Weapons and other armaments belonging to the enemy were destroyed,” Aweis further reported.
Aweis announced that a clearing operation continues to unfold in the Mahaday district, Middle Shabelle region. Al-Shabaab militants who crossed the Shabelle River have been encircled and are cut off from receiving additional support. “The war and the bombardment continue unabated,” Aweis noted.
Minister Aweis emphasised that the states of Hirshabelle and Galmudug are currently the primary fronts in the ongoing battle against Al-Shabaab. He noted that government forces have achieved considerable successes in these areas as part of their sustained counterterrorism efforts.
