(25-10-23) LUANDA – High-ranking officials from the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Somalia have joined global counterparts at the 147th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Luanda, Angola, which runs from 23 to 27 October 2023.
Senator Abdinasir Ibrahim Guled, the Secretary General of the Upper House, and MP Mahamed Abdullahi Abdi Iyow, the Deputy Secretary of the National Assembly, are participating in this year’s event, hosted by the National Assembly of Angola.
The IPU Assembly’s overarching theme, “Parliamentary action for peace, justice and strong institutions,” is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16. The Assembly aims to foster trust between people and governance structures and to enable public institutions to be more effective, accountable, and representative.
Particular emphasis this year has been placed on enhancing the accountability of world Parliaments and on the urgent need to transition from paper-based systems to modern digital platforms.
Senator Abdinasir hailed the focus of the conference, promising swift action back home. “The Somali Parliament is committed to expediting the digitalisation of our systems, which will, in turn, enhance representation, lawmaking, and most importantly, accountability,” said the Senator in his address to the assembly.
The deliberations hold special significance for Somalia, a country deeply invested in institution-building amid ongoing challenges related to security and governance. The digitalisation of parliamentary procedures is considered a critical component to improve efficiency and transparency, aligning the nation more closely with international standards.
The participation of such high-level Somali officials signals the country’s determination to modernise its legislative framework and make significant advancements in accountability and governance.
