(27-10-23) ISTANBUL – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia met with his Turkish counterpart, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in Istanbul on Friday to deliberate on deepening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation in various sectors.
President Mohamud briefed Erdoğan on the strides Somalia has made in its ongoing war against terrorism. According to Mohamud, the Somali Armed Forces, in collaboration with local communities, have successfully reclaimed over 80 districts previously under terrorist control. These accomplishments signify a turning point in Somalia’s complex battle against insurgency, lending credence to the country’s rehabilitation efforts.
“The symbiosis between Somalia and Turkey is not merely transactional but deeply rooted in fraternal bonds, mutual interests, and a shared vision for regional stability,” stated President Mohamud. He expressed his gratitude towards Turkey for its significant contributions, particularly in the arena of counter-terrorism.
Responding, President Erdoğan commended the Somali people and government for their resilience and efforts in national reconstruction. “Turkey remains resolutely committed to standing alongside Somalia in both its fight against terrorism and its path towards development,” Erdoğan affirmed.
The summit concluded with both parties agreeing to accelerate Turkish involvement in Somali affairs, particularly in the areas of security, governance, and investment. They also concurred on expediting the implementation of joint development projects, previously agreed upon but yet to be initiated.
This meeting, observed as a diplomatic high point, fortifies the partnership between the two nations. It underscores a mutual dedication to fostering a climate of peace and developmental progress in the region.
