(18-10-23) MOGADISHU — The Somali federal government has expressed its approval of the recent political decisions made by SSC-Khatumo traditional elders, marking a significant development in the country’s move towards federalisation.
Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, announced the government’s commitment to collaborate with SSC-Khatumo’s newly elected administration in a press briefing in Mogadishu on Thursday.
Fiqi underscored the government’s ongoing dedication to fostering peace and stability in the SSC-Khatumo region, which comprises the Sool, Sanaag, and Ayn areas. “The federal government commends the SSC for their proactive stance on a ceasefire and their commitment to peaceful coexistence,” said Fiqi.
He further urged Somaliland and SSC-Khatumo to halt hostilities immediately and to release any detained individuals. “The federal government is ready to facilitate these activities,” Fiqi added.
In his remarks, Fiqi also outlined the government’s immediate plans to improve essential social services in the SSC-Khatumo areas. This includes initiatives to enhance education, healthcare, and water supply facilities, while also tackling humanitarian concerns.
The federal government has appealed to national agencies, the Somali diaspora, and international bodies to promptly render humanitarian assistance to these areas.
Earlier this year, in a major political shift, traditional elders and leaders from the SSC-Khatumo region declared their allegiance to the Somali federal government, distancing themselves from both Somaliland and Puntland. This decision comes as part of a broader commitment to support the complete federalisation of Somalia.
The federal government’s endorsement of SSC-Khatumo’s political stance represents a significant step towards national unity, though questions remain about its practical implementation.
