(05/11/23) MOGADISHU — The Puntland Government has formally addressed the severe flood crisis that has engulfed Galkayo, the capital of the Mudug region, following two days of intense and unrelenting rainfall.
A statement released by the Puntland Ministry of Internal Affairs on Sunday acknowledged the widespread devastation caused by the flooding. It specifically mentioned the most affected neighbourhoods, including Ghasir, Horumar, and areas inhabited by displaced persons within Galkayo. These areas have seen significant property damage, and numerous families have been displaced from their homes.
The ministry’s statement also raised alarm over the collapse of sanitation facilities, which poses a serious health hazard. Additionally, the floods have led to major disruptions in the city’s transportation, leaving many residents isolated and prompting the closure of crucial public services such as schools and healthcare centres.
In response to this urgent crisis, the Puntland Ministry of Internal Affairs has called upon emergency aid agencies for immediate assistance. It also urged the Puntland community to unite in support of those affected in Galkayo, particularly focusing on health-related assistance and enhancing the city’s drainage infrastructure.
