(05/11/23) MOGADISHU — The Federal Government of Somalia declared its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Sunday. This ambitious step announced through a brief statement by the Somalia mission at the United Nations, marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s international relations.

The coveted seat, part of the five non-permanent seats on the Council, will be contested in mid-2024, during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Should Somalia succeed in its bid, it will hold the position until 2026, representing a unique opportunity for the East African nation to influence global decision-making.

The Somalia mission emphasised the country’s readiness to lead Africa’s agenda on peace and security at the UNSC. The statement affirmed Somalia’s commitment to the principles and conventions of the United Nations, aiming to contribute to a peaceful, stable, and prosperous international order.

This move is seen as a step forward for Somalia in asserting its role in international diplomacy and regional stability. The bid for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council is a clear indicator of Somalia’s growing ambitions on the global stage and its dedication to contributing to major international issues, particularly those affecting Africa.
