13-12-23) MOGADISHU (HN) — The federal government welcomed the international endorsement of its Security Sector Development Plan, a significant step in the nation’s pursuit of stability and self-reliance in security matters. The endorsement came during the Somali Security Conference held in New York on 12 December, 2023, a gathering that brought together representatives from 28 friendly nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and members of the African Union, European Union, and the United Nations.

The plan marks a key moment for Somalia as it seeks to assume full ownership of its security sector, an important aspect of the nation’s broader political stability goals. The strategy focuses on establishing effective, accountable, and transparent security forces and institutions.

The conference also acknowledged the Somali National Armed Forces’ and community forces’ significant progress in combating the Al-Shabaab terrorist group. The concerted efforts have led to the recapture of key areas and weakened the group’s financial and military capabilities. The role of the African Union Mission to Somalia (ATMIS) and international partners in supporting these efforts was also recognised.

Further, the conference highlighted important strides in constitutional processes, elections, domestic revenue enhancement, and Somalia’s recent integration into the East African Community.  The endorsement follows closely on the heels of the UN Security Council’s unanimous decision to lift a decades-long arms embargo on Somalia, signalling strong international confidence in Somalia’s ability to manage its security forces and institutions.

In response, the Federal Government of Somalia has expressed its readiness to work closely with international partners to support the nation’s security, political, and economic ambitions. This collaboration aims to pave the way for a more stable and prosperous Somalia, marking a new chapter in the nation’s journey towards peace and self-sufficiency.
