(12-12-23) MOGADISHU (HN) — Residents of the town of Moqokori in the Hiiraan region warmly received the Bar ama Baro” educational campaign, a government-led initiative offering free education to the local community. Moqokori was one of the towns in the Hiiraan region liberated from the grip of the militant group Al-Shabaab.
Following liberation from Al-Shabaab, Moqokori has been the focus of the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education’s efforts to deliver free primary, middle, and high school education to those impacted by adverse living conditions.
The community has enthusiastically embraced the programme, with several residents sharing their positive reactions with the state-run media regarding the availability of free education for their children. A mother participating in the programme commended it, emphasising the importance of capitalising on this education for all age groups, including those in rural areas and highlighting its accessibility and cost-free nature.
Residents have lamented a 30-year educational gap, often expressing despair over missed educational opportunities. Now, with the introduction of cost-free education at all levels, there is renewed hope in the community. Under the leadership of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the Somali government is dedicated to educational reform, as evidenced by its policy to recruit 3000 teachers annually to improve community education standards. The “Bar ama Baro” campaign, funded by USAID, is set to expand this model of free education across all regions and villages.
