(07-12-23) ISTANBUL (HN) — The son of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Mohamed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has been barred from leaving Turkey in the wake of a fatal traffic accident that resulted in the death of motorbike courier Yunus Emre Göçer. The incident occurred at the Aksaray exit of the Eurasia Tunnel on November 30.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, spearheading the investigation, has initiated a detailed inquiry into the accident. An expert report, pivotal to the investigation, has attributed primary fault to Mohamed Hassan Sheikh.
Following the tragic event, Turkey’s Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç announced a significant shift in the legal status of the case, given the courier’s death.
In his account, as per the expert report, Mohamed stated that Göçer abruptly stopped and turned towards the pavement without any signal and without wearing a helmet. He claimed that despite immediate braking, he was unable to avoid colliding with the motorcycle. At the time of the collision, his vehicle’s speed was estimated to be between 50 and 55 km/h. Post-accident, Mohamed reportedly assisted the injured Göçer.
The response to the accident was immediate and palpable. A group of motorcycle couriers staged a protest outside the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan, voicing their outrage over Mohamed’s release and seeking justice for their fallen colleague.
Ekrem İmamoğlu, a prominent local figure, expressed his determination to pursue justice: “The son of the President of Somalia is implicated in the death of motorbike courier Yunus Emre Göçer and is subsequently released. This is a matter we cannot overlook. I am committed to following the legal process to its conclusion on behalf of the thousands of motorbike courier workers.”
The case continues to attract widespread attention, both for the tragic loss of life and the involvement of a high-profile individual. The ongoing investigation is expected to unveil more details as the legal proceedings advance.
