(08-12-23) ISTANBUL (HN) — The Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem İmamoğlu on Friday confirmed that Mohamed Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the son of the Somali President, has fled the country. Mohamud was implicated in a fatal traffic accident that resulted in the death of motorcycle courier Yunus Emre Göçer on November 30 in the Fatih district of Istanbul.
Göçer, 38, succumbed to his injuries on December 6, following the collision involving his motorcycle and a vehicle driven by Mohamud. Initial police reports had exonerated Mohamud, but a subsequent forensic report reversed this finding, assigning blame to the president’s son for the incident.
Following the issuance of an arrest warrant on charges of “causing death by negligence,” authorities discovered that Mohamud had already departed from Turkey on December 2, four days before Göçer’s death. This revelation has heightened concerns regarding enforcing laws against individuals with diplomatic links.
The incident has sparked public outcry and debate over diplomatic immunity and accountability in international legal matters. Legal experts and the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office are now grappling with the complex international dimensions of the case.
