(03-12-23) MOGADISHU (HN) — Somali security forces thwarted a potentially devastating explosion at a commercial centre in Mogadishu, arresting a suspect identified through CCTV, officials confirmed on Sunday. The operation, highlighting the rising Al-Shabaab attacks on businesses installing CCTV cameras in their businesses in the capital, marks a significant intervention by the security forces amidst ongoing threats.
According to the Banadir regional administration’s spokesperson, the security operation followed recent resistance to government directives mandating installing CCTV cameras in businesses. This resistance, often violent, has involved the planting of landmines in commercial places.
Salah Omar Hassan (Salah Dhere), elaborated on the incident, noting the seizure of a Bajaj motorcycle equipped with landmines. The timely use of surveillance footage was instrumental in tracing and apprehending the suspects linked to the motorcycle, showcasing the effectiveness of the newly implemented security measures.
The incident comes amid an uptick in attacks targeting businesses complying with the government’s security directive. Somali entrepreneurs are being urged to expedite the installation of CCTV systems, a move seen as vital for enhancing security and aiding law enforcement in promptly identifying and dealing with threats.
The directive, enforced by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), has led to increased security measures in key commercial areas. NISA Commander Mahad Salad’s recent visit to Bakara market underscored the agency’s commitment to enforcing these measures.
