(27-12-23) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — In a week marked by notable political and military developments, the Federal Government of Somalia has shared updates on various fronts. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emphasised the importance of finalising the nation’s constitution, acknowledging the government’s achievements and ongoing efforts to liberate the country from terrorism. In a notable administrative change, President Mohamud dismissed Mr Nasa Ige, the president’s advisor on international relations and programme coordinator. No reasons were provided for the dismissal.
On the diplomatic front, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre welcomed Ms Hodan Hassan, a member of the Minnesota State House of Representatives, highlighting the strengthening ties between Somalia and the United States. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Mr Salah Ahmed Jama inaugurated a significant food security and nutrition resilience project in the Horn of Africa aimed at tackling the pressing issue of food scarcity in the region. The week also saw a sombre moment as government officials signed a book of condolences for the late Minister Khadija Mohamed Diriye.
In military developments, the Minister of Defence, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, announced a significant blow to Al-Shabaab terrorists, with the Somali National Army eliminating 130 militants and seizing many weapons from the enemy. This achievement was complemented by the success of operations in the southern Mudug region, where the Land Forces Commander, General Dayah Abdi Abdulle, reported the killing of 80 Al-Shabaab militants and the liberation of key areas in Aad town.
The government’s focus on disaster management was evident through various initiatives. The Somali National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), in collaboration with local administrations, distributed aid to families affected by crises in different regions. The agency, led by Chairman Mohamud Moallin Abdulle, also met with the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates, Ahmed Juma Al-Rumeysi, to discuss further cooperation.
Concluding the week, Somalia marked a cultural milestone by winning the Medal of Culture, Literature, and Art in the Horn of Africa, celebrated in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This achievement, alongside the UK government’s financial assistance of $9 million for disaster management, underscores the nation’s ongoing efforts towards stability, cultural enrichment, and international collaboration.
