(21-01-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Upper House of Somalia’s Federal Parliament has given a decisive nod to the Civil Service Retirement Bill, marking a significant step in reforming the retirement framework for the nation’s civil servants. In a session chaired by the Second Deputy Speaker, Senator Abdullahi Ali (Timacadde), the bill received overwhelming support, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of its public service workforce.
The legislative proposal, which was subject to its Third Reading during the fourth session of the meeting, is aimed at introducing critical changes to the existing retirement plan for civil servants across Somalia. The session saw Senator Osman Mohamud Mohamed (Dufle), Chairman of the Social Affairs Committee of the Upper House, provide a detailed briefing on the final version of the bill.
Following robust discussions, the bill was put to a vote, garnering significant backing with 28 Senators voting in favour. However, the approval was not unanimous as two Senators opposed the bill, with no abstentions recorded.
State Minister for Labour and Social Affairs, Hon. Yusuf Mohamed, expressed his gratitude to the members of the Upper House for their committed support of the Public Service Pension & Gratuity bill. He lauded their collective effort as a pivotal move in protecting workers’ rights, emphasizing the bill’s role in ensuring a secure retirement and social security for civil servants.
