(06-01-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday annulled the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ethiopia and the self-declared independent region of Somaliland, citing the protection of national sovereignty.
The president, following a parliamentary endorsement, signed a law effectively nullifying the agreement. “This evening, I signed the law nullifying the illegal MoU between the Government of Ethiopia and Somaliland. Our lawmakers and our people stand united in safeguarding our unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity as per international law,” President Mohamud declared in a statement.
The original MoU, viewed by the Somali government as an encroachment on its sovereignty, had sparked significant controversy. The President’s latest action reflects his administration’s firm stance on maintaining national unity and adherence to international law.
This bold step has garnered widespread support within Somalia, showcasing the government’s commitment to defending its territorial integrity. The move is seen as a strong warning against any future agreements perceived as violations of Somalia’s national boundaries.
The cancellation of this agreement is expected to have substantial implications for the geopolitical dynamics in the Horn of Africa. It underscores the Somali government’s determination to uphold its territorial claims and highlights the complex relationship between Somalia, Ethiopia, and Somaliland.
