(21-01-24) CAIRO (Halqabsi News) — Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, in a defining statement of solidarity, has reiterated Egypt’s steadfast commitment to Somalia’s security amidst growing regional tensions. This declaration was made during a significant joint press conference with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Cairo on Sunday.

Taking a firm stance, President Al-Sisi vociferously opposed the Ethiopia-Somaliland Memorandum of Understanding, a contentious agreement involving a region within Somalia. He underscored Egypt’s vehement opposition to the Ethiopia-Somaliland Red Sea agreement, which is seen by Somalia as a direct violation of its sovereignty.

“It is not in anyone’s interest to test Egypt’s patience or threaten its brothers, especially if they requested Egypt’s intervention,” Al-Sisi cautioned. He underscored Egypt’s resolve to counter any external threats to Somalia’s national security, reflecting a deep commitment to regional stability.

Crucially, President Al-Sisi invoked the Arab League’s principles to further emphasize Egypt’s position. “The law of the Arab League stipulates that we must jointly defend an Arab country facing an existential threat. Therefore, the Egyptian government cannot accept any interference that violates the unity and security of Somalia,” Al-Sisi stated. This reference to the Arab League’s law highlights Egypt’s adherence to collective defence and solidarity with fellow Arab nations, especially in times of crisis.

Al-Sisi continued to emphasize Somalia’s integral position within the Arab world and pointed to the rights and protections afforded to Somalia under the Arab League Charter. He reiterated Egypt’s commitment to collective defence strategies against threats to Somalia, assuring proactive measures to safeguard Somali national security.

In his concluding remarks, Al-Sisi firmly asserted, “Egypt stands resolute in its commitment to Somalia’s security. No external actor will be allowed to threaten the Somali people or jeopardize their safety. We are unwavering in our support for our brethren, and if they call upon us, we will not hesitate to act.”

The joint press conference represents a robust united front between Egypt and Somalia against perceived regional threats. It underscores the critical role of regional cooperation and collective defence in maintaining stability in the Horn of Africa.
