(01-02-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — In a pressing call to action, General Mahad Abdirahman Aden, commander of the Somali Correctional Service, has highlighted a severe health crisis in Mogadishu Central Prison. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Commander Mahad described the alarming conditions within the prison, emphasizing the dire need for immediate intervention.
The commander’s report exposed the harsh reality inside the walls: a significant number of inmates are suffering from infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Hepatitis. “The health and lives of inmates are in grave danger,” Commander Mahad stated, expressing deep concern. He pointed out that overcrowding and inadequate medical facilities are key factors contributing to the rapid spread of these diseases among the prison population.
In a passionate plea, Commander Mahad called upon the Somali health community and government agencies to urgently address this public health emergency. “Immediate assistance from hospitals and government bodies is crucial to tackle this crisis,” he stressed.
The deteriorating situation in Mogadishu Central Prison is not a newfound issue. It has been a point of concern and parliamentary debate, leading to the establishment of a committee to investigate the welfare of prisoners. Despite this, little has changed, underlining the need for decisive and prompt action.
The commander’s appeal brings to light the broader challenges of prison reform and healthcare provision in Somalia. As conditions in the prison continue to worsen, the imperative for swift and effective intervention to safeguard the health and rights of the incarcerated is more urgent than ever.
