(13-02-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Former Somali Presidents Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo have publicly accused current President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of reneging on an agreement aimed at resolving the country’s ongoing political disputes through dialogue. The accusations were made in a joint press release on Tuesday, following separate discussions with both President Mohamud and the President of the Puntland State, Said Abdullahi Deni.
The former leaders detailed their efforts to mediate between the conflicting parties, claiming success in persuading both to commit to dialogue as a means to address the political rift. Central to the agreement was a two-week suspension of any constitutional amendments, intended as a goodwill gesture to kickstart peace talks. However, Ahmed and Farmajo now allege that President Mohamud has disregarded this key condition, bringing the dialogue process to a halt.
“Our nation stands at a precarious crossroads, with its very unity and sovereignty at stake,” the statement read. The former Presidents emphasised the critical need for consultation, reconciliation, and compromise, warning that the President’s deviation from his promises could lead Somalia into further division and conflict.
In their press release, Ahmed and Farmajo praised President Deni for his positive engagement and readiness to support the mediation efforts. They laid the blame for any negative outcomes arising from the current political deadlock squarely at President Mohamud’s feet, highlighting the potential implications of his actions for Somalia’s future stability.
