(23-02-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Somali government officially announced a large-scale demonstration set to take place in Mogadishu on Saturday. This gathering aims to express the Somali people’s strong support for the defence and economic cooperation agreement recently forged with Türkiye. Scheduled for Saturday at the Eng. Yarisow Stadium in the Abdiasis district, the event is expected to draw large crowds, symbolizing the unity and approval of the Somali population towards this strategic alliance.
The ratification of the agreement, which came into effect following President Hassan Sheikh’s comprehensive briefing and subsequent approval by the executive and legislative bodies, keeps a key moment in Somalia’s pursuit of enhanced defence capabilities and economic collaboration. Amidst growing concerns over territorial integrity, particularly about maritime boundaries, this agreement is seen as a critical step towards safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty.
The defence and economic cooperation agreement, signed on the 8th of February 2024 in Ankara by the defence ministers of Somalia and Türkiye, encompasses a 10-year plan allowing Turkish forces to operate in Somali waters to deter and protect against any unauthorised activities including piracy, illegal fishing, weapons smuggling and terrorism.
Türkiye’s unequivocal support, highlighted by its warning to Ethiopia against any infringement on Somali sovereignty, illustrates the depth of the Somalia-Türkiye partnership. This alliance further solidified through direct communications between the leaders of both nations, stands as a testament to the international support Somalia has garnered in its quest for peace and prosperity.
