(24-02-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — In a powerful show of solidarity, thousands gathered at the Eng Yarisow Stadium in Mogadishu on Saturday, endorsing the newly signed defence agreement between Somalia and Türkiye. The rally, organised by the Banadir regional authority, drew officials and citizens alike from across the capital underlining the pact’s widespread approval.
Deputy Commissioner of Security and Politics for the Banadir region, Mohamed Ahmed Diriye (Yabooh), addressed the crowd, expressing the regional government’s staunch support for the central government’s strategic move. “The government of Somalia, led by the president of the Republic, and the people of Banadir region, under the guidance of the regional governor and his administration, will stand in unwavering support of our country’s defence, our faith, and our sovereignty,” Diriye declared.
The defence agreement, ratified by the Somali parliament and cabinet last week, has been hailed as a critical step in securing Somalia’s maritime territories against encroachments, particularly from neighbouring Ethiopia. “Somalia urgently needs a defence arm. With Ethiopia’s evident ambition towards our sea, it was imperative to secure our maritime boundaries,” Diriye added, echoing the sentiments of many Somalis who view the pact as essential for the country’s security.
Signed in Ankara by the defence ministers of Somalia and Turkey on the 8th of this month, the agreement permits Turkish forces to operate within Somali waters to deter illegal activities. This 10-year pact has received the endorsement of the Somali government, with President Hassan Sheikh formalising the agreement following its approval by the constitutional bodies.
The Somali-Turkish defence pact also underscores the deep-rooted friendship and alliance between the two nations. “The Turkish government’s full support reflects the strong bond between our countries. We are profoundly grateful for their unwavering friendship,” stated Mohamed Yabooh, reinforcing the mutual commitment to security and cooperation.
