(14-03-24) BELEDWEYNE (Halqabsi News) — Heavy fighting erupted between forces of the Hirshabelle administration and those loyal to the Hiran State administration in Beledweyne, central Somalia, officials and witnesses reported on Thursday. The conflict, which began unexpectedly in the middle of the night near the Lamagalay camp, has resulted in at least two fatalities and five injuries.
Residents described a night of chaos as the battle spread into civilian areas, with stray bullets reaching several neighbourhoods. The violence has caused significant disruption, halting commercial activities and suspending traffic, further straining the community’s daily life.
Tensions in the city remain high with Hirshabelle forces reported to have taken positions around key strategic areas, including the local police station. The situation continues to be volatile, with residents expressing fear and uncertainty about their safety.
In light of the escalating conflict, local intellectuals and community leaders have initiated mediation efforts between the conflicting parties. Beledweyne has faced ongoing administrative disputes undermining the region’s development and stability.
