(02-03-24) BAIDOA (Halqabsi News) — Government forces successfully repelled an attack by Al-Shabaab militants on a military camp located on the outskirts of Baidoa, the capital of Southwest State, according to official reports. The attack commenced early on Saturday when Al-Shabaab militants launched an offensive against Somali military personnel. The exchange of gunfire escalated rapidly, leading to significant confrontations.
Residents reported a harrowing morning as the sounds of battle echoed through the area. “We were woken by the sound of gunfire; it was intense and close,” said one local who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons.
Somali military officials have confirmed that their forces were able to withstand the Al-Shabaab assault and secure the military camp. “Our troops showed remarkable bravery and strength in repelling the attackers,” a Somali military spokesperson stated. “We remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding our people and territory.”
Al-Shabaab, on the other hand, has claimed that they inflicted heavy casualties on the government forces. However, these claims have not been independently verified, and government officials have disputed the assertions.
In response to the attack, security measures in and around Baidoa have been intensified. The Somali military, along with forces from the Southwest State, has launched operations to track down and detain individuals suspected of being associated with the militant group.
