(14-03-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Alpha Group special forces are currently engaging with militants inside the SYL Hotel, following a violent breach by suspected al-Shabab fighters. The attack, characterized by multiple explosions and gunfire, occurred on Thursday night, bringing chaos to the heart of the Somali capital.
The SYL Hotel, situated near the presidential palace, has been a recurrent target for the militant group, recalling the harrowing events of a similar attack back in 2019. This establishment, known for housing federal lawmakers and serving as a hub for political and social gatherings, has once again found itself at the centre of a security crisis.
In the ongoing siege, several high-profile individuals, including Somali lawmakers, police officials, and key government spokespeople, have been reported injured. Among them are the spokesperson for the Federal Government of Somalia and Farhan Mohamed Jimale, the Director of Communications and PR at the Prime Minister’s office. Additionally, the commander of the Turkish-trained police unit Haramcad, Abdihamid Abdullahi Fanah, Faysal Carale, secretary of the Banadir regional administration and federal MP Osman Yusuf Hoosh sustained injuries during the attack.
The hotel, currently a battleground, reportedly has numerous individuals, including lawmakers and journalists, trapped inside, escalating fears for their safety amidst the confrontation. Government forces are making concerted efforts to neutralize the threat posed by Al-Shabab militants entrenched within the hotel premises.
Despite recent heightened security measures in Mogadishu, especially with the advent of the holy month of Ramadan, this attack breaks a period of relative calm in the city. Al-Shabab has since claimed responsibility for the brazen assault through a statement on its Telegram channel.
The situation remains fluid, with no definitive reports on the total casualties as the battle continues. The security forces’ response is critical at this juncture to prevent further loss of life and to restore order in the besieged area.
