(27 April 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The extremist group Al-Shabaab has taken control of several areas in the Mahaday district of the Middle Shabelle region, local sources report. This strategic move follows the withdrawal of government forces from the area.
Early this morning, Al-Shabaab fighters were observed consolidating their hold on areas including Ali Fooldhere and Ciid-Ciidka, situated along the banks of the Shabelle River. These regions had previously been liberated from the group by local army units alongside the Somali National Army.
Officials from the local Mawisley militia confirmed that the takeover occurred after militants crossed the Shabelle River. The group’s apparent objective is to expand its territory and disrupt critical transportation routes between the HirShabelle administration’s Hiran and Middle Shabelle regions.
The situation in the district is reportedly tense, with Somali armed forces initiating operations to reclaim the lost territories. The contested areas have seen prolonged conflict, often involving local forces who have consistently engaged Al-Shabaab militants.
