(21 April 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — An East African Economic Cooperation (EAC) delegation arrived in Mogadishu on Sunday, marking a new chapter in Somalia’s regional engagement as the country officially joined the EAC as its eighth member.
The delegation, composed of members from the EAC’s regional parliament, was welcomed by Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. The prime minister thanked the EAC member states for supporting Somalia’s membership bid.
“Somalia is abundant in natural resources, and our people are recognised for their active creativity and entrepreneurial spirit,” Barre said during the reception. He urged the EAC members to continue supporting harmonising policies and regulations to create a conducive environment for investors and enhance regional security and stability.
Somalia’s membership comes after nearly four months of efforts and meeting all requirements to join the regional bloc. The accession is expected to strengthen economic ties and security cooperation within the East African region.
