(24-06-24) NEW YORK (Halqabsi News) – The United Kingdom has called on Somalia to maintain its focus on security sector reform as the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) prepares to withdraw. UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador James Kariuki, emphasised the crucial nature of this period in Somalia’s security transition.
Ambassador Kariuki urged continued collaboration with international partners, including the UN and the African Union, to ensure that the progress achieved in security is not reversed. He also congratulated Somalia on its recent election to the UN Security Council for the 2025-2026 term, marking a return after over 50 years.
Furthermore, the ambassador acknowledged the ongoing constitutional review process in Somalia and encouraged inclusive consultations with all stakeholders to ensure comprehensive political and constitutional reforms.
Welcoming the African Union Communiqué, Kariuki praised the joint strategic assessment for post-ATMIS security arrangements and reiterated the UK’s commitment to working closely with Somali authorities and other partners to support the country’s security and stability.
