(30-06-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The commander of US forces in Africa, General Michael Langley, has expressed concerns that Somalia could face a situation similar to Afghanistan’s 2021 Taliban takeover, following the withdrawal of African Union (ATMIS) troops.

In remarks highlighting the threat posed by the Al-Shabaab group, General Langley warned that the militants could exploit the departure of ATMIS forces to launch attacks and potentially seize control of the government.

“The withdrawal of the African Union troops may have an impact on security in Somalia, and Al-Shabaab may carry out attacks in Mogadishu and other places,” said General Langley. He stressed the importance of the Somali government recognising the dangers during this transition period.

Despite these concerns, the general expressed optimism that the threat could be mitigated if the Somali people support their government and the ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.

General Langley also reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to strengthening its support for the Somali government and increasing its military presence in the country, citing the recent gains made by Al-Shabaab and ISIS.

These remarks follow a meeting last week between General Langley and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Mogadishu, during which they discussed the fight against Al-Shabaab and the withdrawal of ATMIS troops.

Somalia is expected to take over security responsibilities from foreign forces by the end of the year, with a new African Union-led mission potentially replacing ATMIS.
