(15-07-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The Somali federal government is rolling out a project to assist 1 million internally displaced people (IDPs) across the country, Planning Minister Mohamud Abdirahman Beenebeene announced.
Speaking at the National Development Forum, Minister Beenebeene underscored the government’s dedication to addressing the needs of displaced communities. The ministry, he said, is spearheading the creation of a national plan in collaboration with federal and regional planning ministries.
The forum, convened by the Ministry of Planning, brought together planning ministers from across Somalia’s federal member states to discuss and coordinate development efforts. It marked the conclusion of the ninth five-year national development plan and opened discussions on future strategies.
Minister Beenebeene emphasised the significance of long-term planning to tackle the challenges faced by Somalia’s estimated 4 million IDPs, who have fled conflict, violence, and poverty, according to a 2023 Refugees International report. The government’s project aims to provide vital support and services to these displaced populations, bolstering their well-being and resilience.
