(31-07-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The House of the People approved the National Disability Rights Protection Bill with a decisive majority of 135 votes in favour, one against, and four abstentions. MP Hawa Sokor Ali, Chair of the Human Rights Committee, presented the bill and thanked the MPs for the confirmation.
Newly appointed Minister of Family Affairs and Human Rights, Bashir Mohamed Jama ‘Bashir Goobbe’, also expressed gratitude for the bill’s passage. Minister Goobbe thanked the members for their support, underscoring the importance of the legislation in advancing human rights.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) was quick to welcome the passing of the National Disability Bill, saying it marked an important milestone for all persons with disabilities in Somalia.
Following the approval, the House proceeded to the third reading of the Employment Law of Somalia. The session, chaired by First Deputy Speaker Saadia Yasin Haji Samatar and Second Deputy Speaker Abdullahi Omar Abshirow, also featured the swearing-in of the new Minister of Public Works and Housing, Mohamed Mohamud Hayd.
