(24 Aug 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Heavy fighting erupted today in Lower Shabelle between Al-Shabaab militants and ATMIS forces, resulting in an unconfirmed number of casualties.
The clashes were triggered by Al-Shabaab attacks on ATMIS military bases in Danow and Bur-Colow. ATMIS reported repelling the attacks and maintaining control of the areas. Al-Shabaab, on the other hand, claimed a significant victory and the killing of ATMIS soldiers, without providing specific figures.
The situation has since stabilized, with ATMIS conducting follow-up operations in collaboration with government forces.
This incident underscores the persistent security challenges in Somalia, even as ATMIS nears the end of its mandate. The UN-approved transition to a new mission is underway, but Al-Shabaab continues to launch attacks on military bases in southern and central regions.
