(26 Aug 2024) GAROWE (Halqabsi News) – Puntland security forces have intercepted a consignment of surveillance drones concealed within electronic equipment en route to the strategically important city of Galkayo. The discovery, initially reported as Iranian-made kamikaze drones, highlights the evolving tactics of extremist groups operating within Somalia’s borders.

Following intelligence reports, senior security officials confirmed the interception between Garowe and Galkayo. The drones, believed to have entered Puntland via Bosaso, were destined for Galkayo, a city often contested in the ongoing conflict. While the drones were initially suspected to be kamikaze drones, further investigations have revealed them to be smaller devices primarily intended for surveillance purposes.

Some analysts speculate that the Puntland administration’s initial disclosure about the nature of the drones may have been aimed at garnering increased attention and support from international partners involved in Somalia’s counterterrorism efforts.

This incident underscores the adaptability of extremist groups and the challenges faced by security forces in combating their evolving tactics. The Puntland authorities are investigating the seven suspects apprehended in connection with the intercepted drones and have not released further details.

The use of surveillance drones, even if not weaponized, poses a significant threat as they can be used for surveillance, target identification, and potentially facilitating future attacks. This incident emphasizes the need for continued vigilance, enhanced intelligence capabilities, and adaptable counter-terrorism strategies to effectively address the dynamic security landscape in Somalia.
