(03 Aug 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – In the wake of last night’s devastating attack on Lido Beach in the Abdicasis district, Mogadishu’s hospitals are struggling to cope with the influx of casualties. The death toll has risen to 36 with more than 90 injured, Digfeer, Kalkaal and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Hospitals have issued urgent appeals for blood donations, particularly O-, A-, B-, A+ and B+ types.

Kalkaal Hospital, offering free emergency services to the injured, reported admitting approximately 70 people with varying degrees of injuries.

The attack, which occurred on a busy Friday evening at the popular Beach View Hotel, has left the city reeling. A survivor recounted witnessing a suicide bomber targeting the hotel and described the chaotic aftermath with delayed rescue efforts.

The Somali government confirmed that security forces neutralized five attackers and intercepted a vehicle laden with explosives. Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack. This incident follows two recent attacks in the capital, highlighting a concerning resurgence of Al-Shabaab activity.

Adding to the tension, a leaked UN memo warned staff of a potential Al-Shabaab drone attack just days before the Lido Beach assault.
