(15 Oct 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – On Tuesday, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre met with the Acting Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia, James Swan, at his office. The Office of the Prime Minister reported that the discussion focused on strengthening Somalia-UN cooperation and supporting the government’s top priorities, including stabilising areas reclaimed from Al-Shabaab, advancing towards direct elections, and addressing urgent humanitarian challenges.
UN envoy Swan has been actively mediating the dispute between the federal government and several Federal Member States (FMS) on elections among other national issues. His efforts recently took him to Kismayo, where he met with Jubaland leader Ahmed Mohamed Islam to discuss the state-building agenda, countering Al-Shabaab, and the National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting.
Earlier, Swan also engaged with senior Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) officials to review NCC developments. He underscored the importance of open communication between the regional and federal leadership in his discussions. The meetings emphasised the need to resolve outstanding issues to ensure a unified approach to Somalia’s governance and security goals.
