(25 Oct 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The Federal Government of Somalia has gained a significant boost in its campaign to combat climate change and secure food supplies. Hon. Ambassador Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, Minister of Environment and Climate Change has signed a new funding agreement with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for the Agricultural Climate Change Resilience Project, titled “Climatic Resilience in Somalia.”

The project will introduce climate-smart agricultural practices, improve irrigation infrastructure, enhance early warning systems, and promote climate-resilient livelihoods. Together, these initiatives aim to shield Somalia’s agricultural sector from extreme weather conditions, including droughts and floods, which have severely impacted the region.

Minister Khadija expressed her gratitude to the GCF for its support and emphasised the importance of this project for Somalia. “This funding is a major step forward in our efforts to build a more resilient and sustainable future for our people,” she stated.

The GCF’s investment in Somalia’s agricultural sector underscores the country’s commitment to tackling climate change and ensuring food security for its population. By strengthening the resilience of its agricultural systems, Somalia is taking a decisive step to better protect its agricultural backbone, securing food security and uplifting livelihoods nationwide.
