(03 Nov 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The Somali National Army inaugurated its new Ground Forces headquarters in Mogadishu on Sunday, marking a pivotal step in Somalia’s mission to modernise its defence infrastructure and bolster its combat capabilities. This development comes at a critical time as the nation prepares for the withdrawal of ATMIS forces in December, underscoring the importance of self-reliance in maintaining security.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Speaker of the Federal Parliament Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, Defence Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, SNA Commander General Ibrahim Sheikh Muhidin, and Acting Land Forces Commander Brigadier General Dayah Abdi Abdulle.

In his address, Defence Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur highlighted the significant progress made by the Somali Army in recent years, noting its successful efforts to secure bases previously held by ATMIS, despite concerns over potential Al-Shabaab infiltration. “The Somali Army is transforming in terms of equipment, expertise, and morale,” he stated. “This new headquarters is a testament to our collective efforts and a symbol of our commitment to building a strong and capable military.”

Minister Noor further declared, “Great success has been achieved in the fight against Al-Shabaab, and we are poised for a heavy and unexpected defeat of the group in the near future.” He urged civilians living in areas controlled by Al-Shabaab to evacuate and stay clear of these regions, warning that forthcoming actions could pose risks to their safety. “In the near future, something big that you don’t expect will happen to Al-Shabaab; people should stay away from it,” he cautioned.

The Minister reaffirmed that airstrikes and ground assaults will continue as part of the strategy to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s capabilities. “You know there is a war going on; there is no truce between us and Al-Shabaab. The President has called for intensified air and ground operations,” he stated, acknowledging reports of civilian casualties resulting from bombardments.

Ongoing clashes are reported in southern and central Somalia, with air support being a crucial element in the operations against Al-Shabaab forces. The Minister’s statements reflect the government’s determination to decisively weaken the group’s influence and ensure stability in the region.

The new headquarters is expected to enhance coordination, planning, and operational efficiency within the Somali National Army, providing a strategic advantage in upcoming military operations. As the country prepares for the withdrawal of ATMIS forces, the military is increasingly relying on its own capabilities to maintain security and stability, with a focus on protecting civilians and restoring order in conflict-affected areas.
