(01 NOV 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The Finance Committee of Somalia’s two houses of Parliament has pledged to increase budgetary allocations for the Somali Armed Forces, recognising the role they play in maintaining national security.
In a session held on Thursday, the committee engaged with top security officials, including the Defence Minister, to address the military’s urgent financial needs. Defence leaders presented a comprehensive report highlighting the hardships faced by soldiers, including low salaries, lack of essential equipment, and harsh conditions on the front lines.
The current monthly salary of $200 has drawn widespread criticism for being inadequate, especially given the risks soldiers face. Recent appeals from members of the People’s Assembly have amplified these concerns, urging the government to prioritise the welfare of its forces. “We are here to ensure that our soldiers receive the support they need,” remarked one Finance Committee member.
This pledge from the committee has been met with relief by the military, which has long struggled with underfunding. The anticipated budget increase is expected to improve soldiers’ living conditions, enhance access to equipment, and boost their capacity to address national security threats effectively.
