(13 Nov 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Seven Al-Shabaab militants have surrendered to authorities in Harardheere, southern Mudug region. Harardheere Deputy District Commissioner Mohamed Abshir Jirow told state media outlet SNTV that among the defectors are the group’s second-ranking doctor in the Mudug region and several senior members.
Jirow attributed the defections to intensified military operations against Al-Shabaab, internal divisions within the group, and harsh living conditions. The defectors reported growing concerns about the outfit’s internal conflicts and heightened fear due to the ongoing military offensive. They surrendered unarmed, stating that they feared reprisals against their families if they had defected with Al-Shabaab weapons.
Jirow welcomed the defections and encouraged other members to renounce violence. He also called on local communities to unite in support of peace and stability in the region.
