(12 Nov 2024) HARGEISA (Halqabsi News) — With Somaliland’s presidential election set to take place tomorrow, the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) has arrested a group of youths involved in purchasing voting cards illegally. The move comes as more than a million registered voters prepare to choose their next leader in an election viewed as pivotal for the region’s stability and economic future.
According to officials, the case has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further inquiry, with investigations currently involving up to eight suspects. Authorities have stated that strict measures are in place to deter any actions that might compromise the integrity of the electoral process.
Incumbent President Muse Bihi Abdi of the ruling Kulmiye party is vying for a second term, contending against strong challengers from Waddani’s Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi and UCID’s Faisal Ali Warabe. The candidates have each pledged to prioritise international recognition for Somaliland, alongside tackling key domestic issues to drive growth and development.
