(10 Dec 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre met the UK Ambassador to Somalia, Michael Nithavrianakis, to discuss bilateral cooperation and mutual interests between the two nations.
According to the Office of the Prime Minister, discussions focused on security, politics, counter-terrorism, and the restoration of public voting rights to enable citizens to directly elect their leaders.
Prime Minister Barre reiterated the Somali government’s strong commitment to implementing one-person, one-vote elections, emphasising the importance of returning decision-making power to the people.
On his side, Amb. Nithavrianakis said the discussions also touched upon the Federal Government tension, underscoring the need to find a peaceful resolution. Ambassador Nithavrianakis reassured the UK’s continued support for Somalia’s efforts to achieve its democratic goals, combat extremist groups, and transition national security responsibilities to national forces.
