Somalia’s Ministry of Endowment and Islamic Affairs has reiterated warning to Islamic institutions, Qur’an schools, and mosque Imams against any form of collaboration with extremist groups. In a statement released on January 23, the ministry reminded religious leaders of a standing ban, issued in February 2023, that prohibits any engagement with the militant group Al-Shabaab and other extremist groups.
The ministry noted that despite clear religious rulings issued by Somali scholars in recent years, some institutions and individuals continue to collaborate with such groups by attending forced meetings or visiting areas under Al-Shabaab control.
The ministry announced that any Qur’an teachers, administrators, Imams, or preachers found cooperating with these groups will face severe legal action. “There will be no room for excuses,” the ministry stressed, underscoring its commitment to enforcing compliance.
This latest directive comes amid ongoing efforts by Somali authorities to counter extremist influence across the nation, calling on religious leaders to uphold their duties responsibly.
