The Federal Government of Somalia has announced ambitious plans to upgrade the Port of Mogadishu and construct a new state-of-the-art port to boost the country’s competitiveness on the global stage.
Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport, Mohamud Adan, said the government was charting a path to modernise the Port of Mogadishu and establish a new port to position Somalia as a key player in international trade.
The minister also lauded Somali entrepreneurs for their unwavering commitment to investing in the country and driving remarkable progress. “As a ministry, we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with these trailblazers, ensuring they have the support they need to thrive,” he added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Osman Mohamed Daallo applauded Somali traders for forging direct trade links between China and Somalia. However, he urged vigilance, cautioning against the potential spread of diseases from international trade hubs.
Highlighting the port’s strides in development, Minister Mohamed noted a dramatic increase in its capacity. “The Port of Mogadishu has made impressive headway. Monthly container imports have soared from 1,000 to 6,000—a testament to the remarkable progress achieved.”
The government’s initiatives are expected to solidify the country’s position as a critical trade hub in the region while fostering economic growth.
