(12 Feb 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Somalia and Azerbaijan have signed a series of agreements to boost cooperation in education, energy, security, and governance.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku during an official visit, signing the agreements during their meeting on Wednesday.

The deals include:

  1. Education & Research: Azerbaijan to provide scholarships, enhance academic exchanges, and support research.
  2. Energy Development: Azerbaijan to assist Somalia with oil, gas, and renewable energy development.
  3. Security & Defence Cooperation: Collaboration on military training, counter-terrorism, and security capacity-building.
  4. Good Governance & Public Services: Cooperation on modernizing state institutions and improving services.

The two presidents witnessed the signing, describing the agreements as a commitment to a long-term strategic partnership. President Mohamud, who arrived in Baku on Tuesday, said the visit underscored the growing importance of Somalia-Azerbaijan relations. “This…[is a] shared commitment to fostering economic, diplomatic, and security cooperation for the benefit of our peoples,” he said.

He also formally invited President Aliyev to visit Somalia.

This is the first official visit by a Somali president to Azerbaijan.
