(09 Feb 2025) BOSASO (Halqabsi News) — An armed group suspected to be pirates has seized a Yemeni-owned fishing boat off the coast of Eyl, in Sanaag region, security sources report.
The vessel, which was reportedly operating under a Puntland-issued fishing permit, was intercepted by gunmen believed to be from the local area.
Details of the hijacking remain scarce, and Puntland security forces have yet to release an official statement. However, local security sources have confirmed the seizure, with reports indicating that authorities are monitoring the situation.
This incident follows a similar November 2024 hijacking of a Chinese fishing vessel, which was later released after an alleged ransom payment.
While piracy off Somalia’s coast has declined in recent years due to international naval patrols and security crackdowns, sporadic attacks continue to pose risks to regional and international maritime activity.
