(25 Mar 2025) BAYDHABO (Halqabsi News) – Dozens of Al-Shabaab militants have retreated into parts of South West State, including Bay and Bakool regions, after suffering significant losses in central Somalia’s Middle Shabelle and Hiiraan regions.
According to General Hassan Isaq Omar, commander of the Somali National Army’s 60th Division, militants fleeing recent defeats have been spotted entering rural areas around Baidoa. “They’re on the run. After being hit hard in Middle Shabelle, and Hiiraan, they are seeking refuge in our region. We’re tracking their movements closely,” he said.
Residents reported seeing armed fighters moving through villages in convoys. Military officials believe the group is attempting to regroup and exploit the relatively lower level of military operations in the area.
“We’ve instructed all regional units to be on high alert,” General Hassan added. “This is not a time to relax. We’re determined to prevent any resurgence.”
South West State remains one of the areas where Al-Shabaab retains influence, especially in remote areas. However, government forces say they are prepared to launch pre-emptive operations to contain the threat.
The retreat comes as federal forces intensify offensives in HirShabelle and Galmudug, recapturing key territory with support from local militias and international partners.
